Volunteer Application and Background Check
All onsite volunteers are required to: 

  • Complete a volunteer application that provides general information about themselves 
  • Sign a confidentiality agreement 
  • Authorizes a Criminal Background Check 

Background check 
Since St Paul Men’s Shelter services a vulnerable population of people, extra care is taken ensure the safety of our guests. Therefore, all prospective volunteers are asked to submit to a criminal background check. An infraction on the prospective volunteer’s criminal record is usually not be cause for rejection.

  • Potential volunteers are asked to complete the application at https://outsidersinn.org soon as onsite volunteering is contemplated.
  • Allow at least one (1) week for Outsiders Inn to apply for and receive results of the Background Check.  This is valid for one (1) year.

Volunteer application and background check authorization is an electronic form that can be found at: https://www.outsidersinn.org/sws  Allow at least 1 week for processing.  These are considered valid for one year. 

Confidentiality
All onsite volunteers are asked to sign the Confidentiality Form.
Please print this off, read and sign it, and bring the signed copy with you when you volunteer with WHO. The signed form is valid for the entire season (only need to print and bring in with you the first time this year that you volunteer at St Paul.)

Guests in our shelter are protected under the HIPPA act: Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. This law prohibits workers and volunteers from relaying confidential Protected Health Information* to other guests and any persons outside the shelter. Information that is conveyed directly from the guest is completely confidential. 

*Protected Health Information (PHI) includes any identifying information such as name, social security number, address, phone number and birth date. Additional types of Protected Health Information are photos, medical record numbers, health plan numbers, admission and discharge dates.
